Built by Carmelite friars, around the end of XVI century and half of the XVII century, the church, besides serving as an important catechizing Indian center, was built on top of a plateau to watch Paraíba’s River mouth for enemy vessels. Its architecture follows the tropical baroque style, highlighting deformed angels figures, empire weapons and even a skull, all carved on its limestone facade.
